Boston
Convention 2025

August 7th - 10th

Welcome to the NUP Diaspora Boston Convention!

Dr. Daniel Kawuma

NUP Diaspora Team Leader

Our annual convention provides a platform to reflect on our shared journey and strategize for the future. In Washington, D.C., we examined the critical relationship between Uganda and the Western world, discussing how these partnerships can influence democratic change while balancing national interests with the rights and freedoms of the Ugandan people. In Chicago, we painted a vision of what a New Uganda could look like post-Museveni.

In Boston, we aim to reignite the passion and responsibility of the diaspora as catalysts for transformative change. After 38 years of authoritarian rule, we must unite and equip ourselves with the strategies, resources, and determination needed to support Uganda’s transition to democracy.

We encourage every Ugandan in the diaspora and friends of Uganda to attend and actively participate in this pivotal gathering. Together, we can build a roadmap for liberation and ensure a brighter future for our country.

Speakers:

President Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, 43, is a Ugandan politician, lawyer, singer and actor. He rose to fame in the early 2000s as an artiste using the stage name ‘Bobi Wine’. His music evolved overtime to address social issues including health care, human rights, and democracy, eventually earning him the nickname “Ghetto President”.

In 2017, Mr. Kyagulanyi joined elective politics, winning a seat in Uganda’s Parliament for the constituency of Kyadondo County East. In 2020, Mr. Kyagulanyi became President of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party. He subsequently ran on the NUP ticket for president in Uganda’s 2021 elections, challenging Mr. Yoweri Museveni 35-year rule.

After two months of a particularly violent campaign in which he survived assassination on at least 3 occasions, Mr. Kyagulanyi was declared as 1st runner-up with 3.4 million votes in the highly contested election whose results he rejected. He remains NUP’s Party President, advocating for the rule of law, democracy and human rights.

S.G. David Lewis Rubongeya

David Lewis, 37, is a Ugandan lawyer, academic and politician. He has been the Secretary General of Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party since 2020.

Educated from Harvard University (Master’s in Constitutional Law) and the University of Oxford (Master’s in International Human Rights Law), Mr. Lewis previously served as a lecturer of Constitutional Law at the International University of East Africa, and as Counsel at Uganda’s Equal Opportunities Commission.

Leveraging his legal expertise, academic background and previous connection to Uganda’s ruling NRM party, Mr. Lewis has been pivotal in shaping NUP’s existence, policy and direction. He has been a key player in organizing and mobilizing support for NUP; his efforts not only strengthening the Party but also inspiring a new generation of Ugandans to engage in political activism and demand accountability from their leaders.

Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi

Leader of Opposition of Uganda Parliament

Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi is the Leader of Opposition of the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda and elected representative of the Nakawa West constituency in Kampala. He also serves as the Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform.

Hon. Ssenyonyi brings his exceptional leadership, communication skills and passion for public service to the forefront. His dedication to transparency and accountability underscores his commitment to fostering positive change in Uganda.

Statements from our leaders

Marvin Bbale

NUP Boston Chapter Leader

Our chapter is a dynamic and inclusive community for Ugandans across the United States who seek meaningful change in our homeland. Over the years, Boston has stood at the forefront of advocacy, with passionate Ugandans taking to the streets of Waltham, Boston, Washington DC and New York City to voice their dissatisfaction with the state of affairs back home.

Boston is home to highly motivated individuals with incredible stories and invaluable contributions to both the Ugandan cause and the diverse communities they serve. We welcome everyone who shares our vision for a better Uganda, proudly demonstrating our resilience and determination on a global stage.

This convention is an opportunity to inspire a new generation of leaders, deepen the love for the struggle, and showcase that true change is possible. Together, as “Boston Strong,” we continue to pave the way for a brighter future for Uganda.

Moses P. Mujjawa

Chairman Organizing Committee

I extend my warmest welcome to everyone who shares the vision of a free and democratic Uganda. Your commitment to justice, democracy, and human rights is the cornerstone of our collective struggle for a brighter future.

This convention offers an opportunity for all advocates for change to come together, share ideas, develop strategies, and strengthen our solidarity in the fight against dictatorship. By amplifying our voices and uniting our efforts, we can build the foundation for a new Uganda—one where freedom, justice, and equality are not just aspirations but realities for all Ugandans.

I urge Ugandans and Friends of Uganda, whether at home or abroad, to actively participate in this historic gathering. Your voice matters, and your contributions are vital to shaping the future we all envision. Together, let us commit ourselves to creating a Uganda that reflects the hopes and dreams of its people.

Mabel Nakyazze

Vice Chair, Organizing Committee

This convention is a pivotal gathering for all who are committed to the fight for justice, democracy, and human rights in Uganda. It is an opportunity to mobilize, organize, and pool resources and ideas needed to support our comrades on the ground who continue to face persecution, human rights abuses, and the absence of free and fair elections.

Together, we will strategize on ways to level the playing field, ensuring our brothers and sisters in Uganda have a fair chance to determine their future. This is a critical moment to unite our efforts, and your participation is vital to our shared mission.

We encourage you to register early and be part of this transformative event. Let us continue to stand together in the pursuit of a better Uganda.
