Our annual convention provides a platform to reflect on our shared journey and strategize for the future. In\u00a0Washington, D.C., we examined the critical relationship between Uganda and the Western world, discussing how these partnerships can influence democratic change while balancing national interests with the rights and freedoms of the Ugandan people. In\u00a0Chicago, we painted a vision of what a New Uganda could look like post-Museveni.<\/p>

In\u00a0Boston, we aim to reignite the passion and responsibility of the diaspora as catalysts for transformative change. After 38 years of authoritarian rule, we must unite and equip ourselves with the strategies, resources, and determination needed to support Uganda\u2019s transition to democracy.<\/p>

President\nRobert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi\u200b\n<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, 43, is a Ugandan politician, lawyer, singer and actor. He rose to fame in the early 2000s as an artiste using the stage name ‘Bobi Wine’. His music evolved overtime to address social issues including health care, human rights, and democracy, eventually earning him the nickname “Ghetto President”.<\/p>

In 2017, Mr. Kyagulanyi joined elective politics, winning a seat in Uganda’s Parliament for the constituency of Kyadondo County East. In 2020, Mr. Kyagulanyi became President of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party. He subsequently ran on the NUP ticket for president in Uganda’s 2021 elections, challenging Mr. Yoweri Museveni 35-year rule.<\/p>

After two months of a particularly violent campaign in which he survived assassination on at least 3 occasions, Mr. Kyagulanyi was declared as 1st runner-up with 3.4 million votes in the highly contested election whose results he rejected. He remains NUP’s Party President, advocating for the rule of law, democracy and human rights.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

S.G. David Lewis Rubongeya<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

David Lewis, 37, is a Ugandan lawyer, academic and politician. He has been the Secretary General of Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party since 2020.<\/p>

Educated from Harvard University (Master’s in Constitutional Law) and the University of Oxford (Master’s in International Human Rights Law), Mr. Lewis previously served as a lecturer of Constitutional Law at the International University of East Africa, and as Counsel at Uganda’s Equal Opportunities Commission.<\/p>

Leveraging his legal expertise, academic background and previous connection to Uganda’s ruling NRM party, Mr. Lewis has been pivotal in shaping NUP’s existence, policy and direction. He has been a key player in organizing and mobilizing support for NUP; his efforts not only strengthening the Party but also inspiring a new generation of Ugandans to engage in political activism and demand accountability from their leaders.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
